Williamstown 3016
Window tinting across Williamstown 3016, one of the oldest parts of Melbourne and a suburb where the window stock splits sharply.
The original cottages and Victorian terraces have small sash windows that were never built for big glass, while almost every home that has been worked on since has a rear extension with far more glazing than the front of the house. That split decides the film.
We work across Williamstown and Williamstown North.

Why choose us
Why Williamstown homeowners choose us
Most Williamstown homeowners get a salesperson for the measure, someone else they never speak to for the ordering, and a subcontractor they have never met for the install. When something goes wrong, each party points at the other.
With Stay Shady your Williamstown job stays with one person from start to finish. Dany measures your windows, quotes them on the spot, installs the film, and stands behind the warranty. That single point of accountability is why clients across Williamstown come back for second and third projects.

Local knowledge
Williamstown up close
Williamstown housing stock
The dominant stock is Victorian and Federation: single-fronted weatherboards through Garden Street and Cole Street, double-fronted brick Victorians along Esplanade and Nelson Place, and Federation cottages in the streets behind the railway.
Most still hold their original timber sash windows, often with the sash cords still working. North toward the railway you pick up some 1920s and 1930s Californian bungalows.
The foreshore between the Time Ball Tower and Williamstown Beach has a small but growing pocket of large architect-designed rebuilds with floor-to-ceiling glazing facing the bay.
Apartments are mostly limited to recent infill near the station and the small commercial strip at Nelson Place.
Heritage overlay status applies across most of the older streets, which restricts visible external changes but not what goes on the inside of the glass: film is applied to the existing pane and changes nothing about the window line.
Sun and climate
Williamstown's geometry creates a sharp split. Foreshore-facing rooms get strong easterly morning light off the bay and intense southerly weather in winter.
Streets running back into the suburb get the standard western Melbourne afternoon sun, but the older homes tend to have small windows by modern standards, so heat load is more controlled than it's in the new western suburbs.
The real issue is UV on north and west elevations: original tongue-and-groove flooring fades fast where afternoon sun lands, and many heritage homes have leather or aged-velvet furniture that suffers within two summers without any window treatment.
Sea spray and salt don't reach far inland here in the way they do at exposed bayside suburbs further west, though foreshore homes still get enough salt that anything mounted on the outside of a window has a hard life.
What works in Williamstown
The rear extensions are where solar film earns its money. Those additions typically carry more glass than the rest of the house combined, face north or west, and were glazed for light rather than for heat.
A quality solar film on that glass takes the load off without changing the way the extension looks. At the front of the house the job is usually different.
The original rooms sit close to the footpath, so frosted film on bathrooms and door sidelights is the common request, and it suits period glass because it reads as an obscured pane rather than something applied.
Film is also the low-impact option in a heritage street: it goes on the inside of existing glass, so nothing is fixed to the frames and nothing changes what the house looks like from the road.
On the ground
Common questions in Williamstown
Not in the way a fixed external product would. Film goes on the inside face of the existing glass, so nothing is attached to the frames and the window itself is unchanged. A near-clear solar film is essentially invisible from the footpath, which is usually the right call on a street-facing heritage elevation.
In most cases no, because film is applied to the inside of existing glass and is reversible. We are not the approving body though, so if your property carries a specific heritage overlay condition, check with Hobsons Bay council before work is booked.
A solar film with strong infrared rejection. Extensions carry most of the glass in a Williamstown home and were usually glazed for light rather than heat, so that's where the film makes the biggest difference to how the room feels in February.
Yes, Williamstown North is part of the same service area and follows the same free-measure process.
