Window Tinting

A good film on a hot west-facing window can drop the surface temperature of the glass by ten degrees or more. It also blocks the UV that fades floors, art, and timber furniture. Privacy films do the same for street-facing rooms without changing how the window looks from inside.

What’s involved

What we install

  • Solar film for heat and UV reduction on west and north glazing
  • Privacy film, ranging from frosted to one-way mirror finishes
  • Decorative film for bathrooms, ensuites and front entry sidelights
  • Safety and security film for ground-floor and pool-fence glass

Why it works here

Built for Melbourne conditions

Melbourne homes are increasingly built with full-height glazing. That brings light and openness, and also brings heat in summer and faded floors over time. A well-chosen architectural film keeps the look of the glass and removes the downside.

Warranty

Backed in writing

Twelve months workmanship. Manufacturer film warranty depends on the product, confirmed with your quote.

Genuine film, warranted

Authorised dealer for the films that matter

Stay Shady is an authorised dealer for XPEL, SolarGard by Saint-Gobain, UltraGard and Black Armor. That means genuine film sourced direct, installs done to manufacturer spec, and a manufacturer warranty that actually stands behind the work, not grey imports with nobody to call.

Types of window tinting

Which film is right for you?

Frost Tinting & Frosted Window Film

Frost Tinting & Frosted Window Film

Frosted film gives glass the look of acid-etched or sandblasted glass without the permanent commitment or the cost. It blocks the view through the glass from both sides while still letting in around 80 to 90 per cent of natural light. Unlike one-way mirror film, frosted film works equally well day and night. There is no reversal effect after dark, which makes it the go-to choice for bathrooms, ensuites and street-facing sidelights where round-the-clock privacy matters.

  • 24-hour privacy that works identically day and night, unlike mirror film
  • Lets in 80 to 90 per cent of natural light while fully obscuring the view
  • Removable with no permanent change to the glass, ideal for rentals
  • Available in full frost, gradient fade, line patterns and custom cuts
One-Way Mirror Tint

One-Way Mirror Tint

One-way mirror film creates a reflective surface on the outside of the glass during daylight hours. People on the street see their own reflection while you see clearly out. It is the most popular residential privacy film in Melbourne for street-facing living rooms and ground-floor bedrooms. The trade-off is that the effect reverses at night, when interior lights are brighter than the street, so if the room is used after dark, frosted film is the better specification.

  • Full daytime privacy where outsiders see a mirror and you see through clearly
  • Reflects up to 80 per cent of solar heat, reducing cooling costs
  • Blocks 99 per cent of UV, protecting floors, furniture and art from fading
  • Available in silver, bronze, charcoal and blue-grey mirror finishes
Solar Film & Heat Reduction Tint

Solar Film & Heat Reduction Tint

Solar film is the broadest category of residential window tint. It is engineered primarily to reject heat and UV rather than to change the appearance of the glass. Modern ceramic solar films reject 40 to 60 per cent of solar heat while reducing visible light by only 20 to 30 per cent. The room stays bright but noticeably cooler. This is the default recommendation for north and west-facing glazing in Melbourne where summer heat gain is the primary concern.

  • Rejects 40 to 60 per cent of solar heat through the glass
  • Blocks 99 per cent of UV rays that fade floors, timber and upholstery
  • Minimal visible change with modern ceramic film so the room stays bright
  • Reduces air conditioning load and energy bills through summer
Decorative Window Film

Decorative Window Film

Decorative film covers everything from simple frosted strips and gradient patterns through to custom-cut branding and detailed geometric designs. It is most commonly used on bathroom windows, ensuite glass, front entry sidelights and internal glass partitions. The film is applied wet and can be removed cleanly, making it a practical choice for rental properties and commercial fit-outs that change over time.

  • Custom patterns, gradients, stripes and logo cuts available
  • Ideal for bathrooms, ensuites and front entry sidelights
  • Removable without damage, suitable for rentals and offices
  • Pairs well with clear glass to add privacy without losing light
Safety & Security Film

Safety & Security Film

Safety film is a thick, clear polyester film bonded to the inside surface of the glass. It runs between 100 and 300 microns thick. It does not stop glass from cracking on impact, but it holds the broken pieces together in the frame instead of shattering into the room. It is required on certain ground-floor glazing, glass near doorways and pool-fence panels under Australian Standard AS1288. Some homeowners also fit it as a deterrent against break-ins because the film makes it significantly harder to push through a broken pane.

  • Holds broken glass in the frame to prevent dangerous shatter
  • Required under AS1288 for certain ground-floor and pool-adjacent glass
  • Deters break-ins by making it harder to push through a broken window
  • Clear finish that does not change the appearance of the glass

Common questions

Window Tinting questions, answered

Flat glass jobs start at $299+, solar and reflective from $349+, and premium ceramic from $399+. Past the minimum it comes down to how many windows there are, which film suits them and how easy the access is, so a three-window job and a whole-house job are not the same number per window. Safety and security film starts higher again at $499+ because the film is thicker. Dany measures every opening and gives you the price on the spot rather than working off an average.

Modern ceramic solar films reject 40 to 60 per cent of solar heat while only reducing visible light by 20 to 30 per cent, so the room stays bright but noticeably cooler. Older-generation dyed and metallic films did darken rooms significantly, which is where this concern comes from. We bring sample cards in multiple tint levels so you can hold them against your glass in real daylight before deciding. Most homeowners are surprised how little visual difference there is with a quality ceramic film.

It depends on the film and the glass. Standard solar film on double glazing can cause thermal stress because the film absorbs heat, the inner pane heats unevenly, and the sealed air gap expands. This can crack the glass or break the seal, voiding the window warranty. We only use films specifically rated for double glazing, and we check your glass type before quoting. Some windows are fine; some are not. We will tell you straight if film is not the right answer for a particular window.

Most residential jobs take two to four hours. A full home with ten to fifteen windows is typically a half-day job. The film needs a clean glass surface, a slip solution, and a firm squeegee pass to bond, and each window takes about twenty minutes, with larger or unusual shapes taking thirty to thirty-five minutes. The film cures fully in about two weeks depending on season and sun exposure. During curing you may see small moisture pockets or a slight haze, but this is normal and clears as the adhesive dries.

No. One-way mirror film works by reflecting light on the brighter side. During the day, the outside is brighter, so people see their reflection and you see through from inside. At night, your interior lights are brighter than the street, and the effect reverses, so people outside can see in. For night-time privacy you need frosted film, which obscures rather than reflects and therefore works the same at every hour. The trade-off is that you lose the clear view out. If the room matters at night, that is the trade worth making.
