Altona 3018
Window tinting across Altona 3018, in the City of Hobsons Bay about fifteen kilometres west of the CBD and right on the edge of Port Phillip Bay. Altona has two jobs to do at once.
The bay frontage cooks under afternoon sun reflected off the water for half the year, while the inland streets behind the foreshore hold a lot of original post-war weatherboard stock sitting close to the neighbours.
Most Altona work is solar film on the bay glass and frosted film where privacy matters more than view. We measure across Altona, Altona Meadows and Altona North.

Why choose us
Why Altona homeowners choose us
Most Altona homeowners get a salesperson for the measure, someone else they never speak to for the ordering, and a subcontractor they have never met for the install. When something goes wrong, each party points at the other.
With Stay Shady your Altona job stays with one person from start to finish. Dany measures your windows, quotes them on the spot, installs the film, and stands behind the warranty. That single point of accountability is why clients across Altona come back for second and third projects.

Local knowledge

Altona housing stock
Altona's housing stock is unusually mixed for a suburb its size. The original streets behind Pier Street and along Esplanade Avenue are mostly 1950s and early 1960s weatherboards on generous corner blocks, many still in original or lightly renovated form.
Closer to the bay you find a sprinkling of mid-century brick veneers and a small number of large 1990s and 2000s rebuilds with full-height bay-facing glazing. Inland through Altona Meadows the dominant stock shifts to 1980s and 1990s brick veneer family homes on slab.
Altona North picks up older Federation cottages and warehouse-conversion infill near the industrial fringe.
The variety means a measure here usually involves period sash windows in the front rooms, modern aluminium sliders in any rear addition, and large picture windows on the bay side.
Most homes still have original timber architraves, which is one reason film suits this stock: it goes on the glass itself, so nothing is fixed to period joinery.
Sun and climate
Altona has the strongest west and southwest exposure in our service area, which is the single most important factor when choosing film here.
Through summer the afternoon sun rolls in low across the bay, hits the water, and bounces into living rooms for two to three hours longer than it does in inland suburbs at the same latitude. The reflected component is glare, not just heat.
UV load on bay-facing glass is high enough to fade timber floors, leather lounges and artwork inside two summers if the glass is left untreated.
Salt-laden onshore wind also matters, and it's one reason film does well here: it sits on the inside face of the glass, so the weather that degrades anything mounted outside never reaches it. Winter brings the opposite problem.
Southerly fronts come straight off the bay and chill any room with single-glazed bay-facing glass, which is worth knowing because solar film is a summer product and won't solve a winter comfort problem on its own.
What works in Altona
On bay-facing rooms the answer is a neutral solar film with high infrared rejection. The reflected component off the water is glare as much as heat, so the film has to work on both, and a neutral tone holds the colour of the view rather than throwing a bronze cast over the water.
Inland, where the post-war streets sit close together, the more common job is frosted film on bathrooms, ensuites and front-door sidelights, because it gives privacy that holds at night as well as during the day.
One-way mirror film suits the street-facing front rooms where the priority is keeping the view out through the day, as long as you understand it stops working after dark.
Salt air matters here too: film sits on the inside of the glass, so it's unaffected by the onshore wind that weathers anything mounted outside.

Yes. Altona is inside our standard service zone. The free measure and written quote are no charge.
A neutral solar film with high infrared rejection. The bay throws reflected glare as well as heat, so you want a film that works on both, and a neutral tone rather than a bronze so the colour of the water still reads correctly from inside.
No. Mirror film reflects the brighter side, so it screens you during the day and stops working once your lights are on and the path outside is dark. For a room you use at night, frosted film is the one to specify.
Yes, both are part of the Altona service area for us and follow the same free-measure process.
