Footscray 3011

Window tinting across Footscray 3011. Footscray sits inland enough that maritime moderation has minimal effect on summer afternoons, but mature canopy across the older residential streets softens direct sun on most cottage blocks.

The apartments along the river and around the station are a different story: they typically face open sky with no canopy shading, so west-facing units run hot through the afternoon. The suburb needs two different answers depending on which half you are in.

Why choose us

Why Footscray homeowners choose us

Most Footscray homeowners get a salesperson for the measure, someone else they never speak to for the ordering, and a subcontractor they have never met for the install. When something goes wrong, each party points at the other.

With Stay Shady your Footscray job stays with one person from start to finish. Dany measures your windows, quotes them on the spot, installs the film, and stands behind the warranty. That single point of accountability is why clients across Footscray come back for second and third projects.

Local knowledge

Footscray up close

Footscray housing stock

Footscray housing is unusually mixed.

The original residential stock is Federation and Edwardian timber cottages on the streets between Geelong Road and the river, many with heritage overlay status that limits external changes but doesn't affect film applied to the inside of existing glass.

A second band of Californian bungalows and 1920s and 1930s brick homes fills out the central residential pocket.

The past fifteen years have brought significant warehouse-to-apartment conversion along the river and around Footscray station, plus a wave of new mid-rise apartment buildings on the older commercial fringe.

Townhouse infill is common across blocks where original cottages have been subdivided or demolished. Hopkins Street, Barkly Street and Nicholson Street carry the long active commercial strip with mixed-era shopfronts.

The window mix runs from original timber-framed sashes in the cottages through industrial-era warehouse glazing to modern aluminium framing in the apartments and commercial glazing along the strip.

Sun and climate

Footscray sits inland enough that maritime moderation has minimal effect on summer afternoons, but mature canopy across the older residential streets softens direct sun on most cottage blocks.

Apartments along the river and around the station typically face open sky with no canopy shading, which means west-facing units run hot through summer afternoons and east-facing units take strong morning load.

The original Federation cottages were built with small windows by today's standards, so heat load on the original glazing is generally manageable without any intervention at all.

The rear extensions that almost every cottage has added in the past twenty years are the real heat problem because most carry large floor-to-ceiling glazing onto a small north-facing courtyard.

Winter is moderate, with the cottages losing heat through single-glazed sashes and the apartments holding heat well due to their thermal mass.

What works in Footscray

In the apartments, solar film is the straightforward win. Those units have large glass, no shading, and usually no ability to change the glazing, so film is the only lever available.

Body corporate rules often require a consistent external appearance, and film suits that better than anything mounted outside, because from the street the glass simply looks slightly darker.

In the cottage streets, the canopy takes the edge off the heat, so the work skews toward privacy and safety: frosted film on bathrooms and sidelights in homes sitting close to the footpath, and safety film on rear sliders where a cottage backs onto a lane.

Along the commercial strips, shopfronts take solar film for heat, frosted for privacy or branding, and anti-graffiti film on glass exposed to the street.

Common questions in Footscray

Yes, comfortably. The free measure and written quote are no charge.

Yes, and they're some of the better candidates for film. Large unshaded glass, no ability to change the glazing, and film is usually the only lever you have.

Usually, because film goes on the inside of the glass and reads as a slightly darker pane from outside, which suits rules about consistent external appearance. We can give you the film spec and a sample to put in front of the committee before anything is booked.

Yes. It's a sacrificial layer on the glass, so when it gets tagged or scratched the film is replaced instead of the glass. We work around trading hours where needed.
