Yarraville 3013

Window tinting across Yarraville 3013. Yarraville sits inland from Hobsons Bay and gets standard western Melbourne summer load, with mature street canopy across most residential blocks providing genuine softening.

The Federation cottages were built with small windows, so the original heat load is manageable. It's the rear glass extensions that almost every home has added which create the problem, and that's where most of our Yarraville work happens.

Why choose us

Why Yarraville homeowners choose us

Most Yarraville homeowners get a salesperson for the measure, someone else they never speak to for the ordering, and a subcontractor they have never met for the install. When something goes wrong, each party points at the other.

Local knowledge

Yarraville up close

Yarraville housing stock

Yarraville's dominant stock is Federation and Edwardian timber cottages, with weatherboard fronts and small leadlight detail on the front windows of many homes.

Single-fronted cottages on narrow lots through Anderson Street and the streets running off it are the most common building type. A second tier of double-fronted Victorian terraces and 1920s Californian bungalows fills out the streets between the village strip and Hyde Street.

A small number of mid-century brick veneer homes appear on the inland side of the railway, and recent townhouse infill has begun appearing where larger original blocks have been subdivided.

The village strip itself is a heritage-protected commercial pocket with Federation-era shopfronts and the Sun Theatre as the anchor landmark.

Window-wise, most homes still hold original timber sash windows in the front rooms, with rear extensions added in the past fifteen to twenty years carrying modern aluminium or thermally-broken framing.

Sun and climate

Yarraville sits inland from Hobsons Bay and gets standard western Melbourne summer load, with mature street canopy across most residential blocks providing genuine softening.

The Federation cottages were built with small windows, so original heat load is manageable through fabric. The rear glass extensions that most homes have added carry the real summer issue because they often face north or west onto small courtyards with no shading.

UV load is high enough on those rear elevations to fade timber flooring and leather upholstery inside two summers if the glass is left untreated. Winter is cold by inner-west standards because the original sashes are single-glazed and many have small gaps that pass cold air.

South-facing front rooms stay cold through July and August in the original stock. The newer rear extensions are usually double-glazed and hold heat better.

What works in Yarraville

The rear extension is the job. Those additions carry more glass than the entire original cottage, usually face north or west, and were glazed for light rather than for heat, which is exactly the situation solar film is for.

A film with a strong infrared number on that glass changes how the back of the house feels without altering the way it looks.

At the front, the canopy and the small original windows mean heat is rarely the complaint, so the work there's privacy: frosted film on bathrooms and door sidelights in cottages that sit close to the footpath.

Film also has a practical advantage in these homes, which is that it touches only the glass. Original architraves, leadlight surrounds and period frames are left completely alone, because nothing is fixed to them.

Common questions in Yarraville

Yes, comfortably. The free measure and written quote are no charge.

No. Film is applied to the glass itself, so nothing is screwed, bracketed or fixed to the frames. On leadlight we work to the individual pane rather than across the lead, and we'll tell you on the measure if a particular panel isn't a good candidate.

A solar film with strong infrared rejection. The extension carries most of the glass and most of the heat load, so that's where the money goes. The original front rooms rarely need it.

Yes. Frosted film is the usual answer in a bathroom, because it gives privacy that holds day and night and still lets the light through, which matters in a small period room.
